Membrane proteins are one of the most challenging drug targets to produce and purify, because of their strong bond with the lipid bilayer, involving electrostaticity, hydrogen, and other types of binding. These proteins can vary in size from small peptides to large membrane-bound enzymes, with many different biochemical properties that often require optimization before high scale expression.
Membrane proteins play key roles in life processes, which is why they are attractive targets for drug discovery projects. They can be membrane-bound receptors such as GPCRs, ion channels, transporters, enzymes, or others.
